USB Audio / MIDI Interface

The TASCAM audio interface lineup welcomes the US-2x2 and US-4x4 to its ranks; both perfect devices for music production. Each has USB audio MIDI interfaces with 2 IN/2 OUT and 4 IN/4 OUT configuration, respectively. Combining them with the popular US-366 (which supports 192kHz and includes stereo mixer functions) will enable users to establish a professional recording environment.

New Update: Settings Panel for Windows

TASCAM USB Audio Interfaces Driver (Settings Panel) software for Windows has been updated to Version 4.00, enabling to build music production environments with ultra-low latency that maximizes the processing power of the computers in use. In this new version, the driver’s stability has been greatly enhanced, the audio buffer size is now selectable up from 4 samples instead of older versions with the default buffer size of 64 samples, and overall usability has been improved.

The main target customers for the US-2x2 and US-4x4 are those, interested in music production, and especially beginners. Development was undertaken to deliver devices that are easy to use and understand, enabling users to simply connect them and immediately enjoy high-sound quality recording.
For mic preamps – a key determinant of sound quality - Ultra-HDDA mic preamps that achieve a stunning EIN rating of -125dBu have been installed. This was a result of careful consideration of user-friendliness when connecting the device with a condenser mic, as well as for dynamic microphones. As a result, the devices can be used in a wide range of applications – from vocal recording to stereo recording of piano and acoustic guitar. The eye-catching innovative design was the brainchild of a prominent German designer that has worked on numerous music production devices. The slightly angular design provides users with desktop recording that’s free from hassle.

Driver and software with easy to use simple settings

Driver software installation is something that every user has to contend with when they start using a USB audio interface for the first time. In order to enable users to start their music production smoothly, the designated driver has been newly designed. This driver software had all complex functions removing, allowing anyone to easily install and use it. Compatibility with most major DAW software has already been confirmed, granting users the option of using the device in combination with DAW system of their choice. In addition, the US-2x2/US-4x4 supports recording using iPad or other iOS devices that have been popular within recent years. Using an Apple-manufactured lightning-USB camera adapter will allow usage of the US-2x2 and US-4x4 as an audio interface for iPads.

A USB 2.0 connection is used for connection to computers so that beginners to DAW recording can use the US-4x4 with ease. Audio buffer size selectable up from 4 samples

With conventional TASCAM drivers, the audio buffer size could only be set originally up from 64 samples. This has been enhanced to support a selection up from 4 samples, enabling users to build music production environments with ultra-low latency that maximizes the processing power of the computers in use. Users can now choose from a wide range of parameters, from a minimum of 4 samples up to a maximum of 2048 samples, depending on the computer's processing power and music production application.

Software window size optimization enabled by HiDPI support

The newly implemented HiDPI (high-dot per inch) function automatically optimizes the size of the Settings Panel window to an appropriate size according to the user's display. No more small appearing of the Settings Panel in a high-resolution display.

"Auto Driver Select" function enables/disables default device settings

Easily activate/deactivate US-series units set as the default IN/OUT audio device in a computer with the new Auto Driver Select function. Activating this function, the computer will always recognize the US unit as default and will allow saving some trouble in setting the device each time. Users can freely choose to disable this function to use different devices depending on the application.

Discrete Ultra-HDDA Mic Preamps Deliver Low Noise and Low Distortion

TASCAM's Ultra-HDDA (High Definition Discrete Architecture) mic preamp design is based on discrete components, just like classic professional gear. They achieve an incredible EIN rating of -125 dBu, meaning their noise level is practically below the range of hearing. TASCAM uses proven, great-sounding components throughout the US-2x2. One example are NE5532 op-amps, famously used throughout classic recording consoles and signal processors due to their sweet, musical sound.

XLR and TRS Accept Balanced Mic and Line Level Signals

The mic input features a professional XLR connector, which supplies +48V phantom power for condenser microphones. The US-2x2 is built from heavy duty metal throughout, so it stays on your desk even when moving mics around.
The combo input jack includes TRS inputs for balanced line-level signals from professional processors and synthesizers. Finally, the two inputs can be switched to high-impedance for direct recording of electric guitar and bass. (Only the XLR or 1/4" input can be used, not both at the same time.)

Wide Gain Range Supports Dynamic and Ribbon Microphones

Non-powered mics like dynamic and ribbon designs can sound great, but they also have a lower output level than condenser microphones. The US-2x2's Ultra HDDA mic preamps not only feature 57dB of gain, but also a low-noise design so you don't crank up the noise at the same time. Plug in modern or classic mics and still get plenty of level on your tracks.

Rock Out with Amp Simulator Software using the Guitar Inputs

The first two channels can be switched to direct guitar inputs. They're ideal for direct recording of electric and acoustic guitar and bass without the need for a preamp. You can also add effect plug-ins for your guitar tone.

Simple Operation and an All-New USB Driver

High Resolution Recording up to 96kHz/24-bit

The US-2x2 records all four channels at up to 96kHz/24-bit resolution. Even if your target is CD or MP3, recording at higher resolutions gives you more to work with in the mix and can result in a smoother sound. The mic preamps and A/D converters work together to capture the clearest signal path, whether you work at 96k or at lower sampling rates.

USB 2.0 Computer Connection

USB 2.0, found on nearly any computer, is used as the interface for the US-2x2. Simply connect the interface to any available USB port to supply plenty of bandwidth, even for multichannel 96k work. (The US-2x2 and US-2x2 are also compatible with USB 3.0 ports.)

Zero-latency Direct Monitoring Function

Even the most efficient computers and DAW software can produce a slight delay before reaching the outputs, which can distract some vocalists and instrumentalists. A Direct Monitoring path is included to monitor the input signal before it is sent to the computer. This allows musicians to concentrate on their performance instead of adjusting for latency delay.

Driver Software Can Be Pre-Installed Without The Interface

The US-2x2 Windows driver software can be installed without connecting the interface. Simple on-screen instructions walk you through the installation. These interfaces can be used on a Mac without installing a driver, but we recommend installing the software to use the control panel.

Connect to iPad, iPhone, or other iOS devices

Use Apple's Camera Connection Kit to connect the US-2x2 or US-2x2 to an iPad or other iOS device. Utilitze the multichannel audio and MIDI functions with any of the thousands of iOS audio apps, like Garage Band or TASCAM's Portastudio app. Class Compliant drivers also allow the interfaces to be used with Android and Windows-based tablets.

The US-4x4 Is Built for Multi-Mic Recording

FAQs

I see that the US-16x08 recommends that I change the Windows Power Management settings. How do I do this?

Windows allows the processor to throttle to half speed when the computer is idle. However, this can affect the performance of DAW recording software. TASCAM recommends that this function be disabled, especially when using a multi-channel interface such as the US-16x08.

To Change the Power Management settings in Windows:

Open the Control Panel.
- In Windows 8 this is under “Settings” in the right pane of the desktop
- In Windows 7 and earlier this is in your Start menu
Open the Power Options control panel by double-clicking it
Click “Show Additional Plans”
Click on “High Performance” in the Power Options

Are TASCAM drivers compatible with Mavericks 10.9.5 and Yosemite?

According to Apple, OS X 10.9.5 includes heightened security measures that will also be part of OS X 10.10. These security measures will affect some TASCAM audio interfaces, so users are advised to be aware, and hold off on updating until further information is available

These products use Apple's built in CoreAudio driver. The Settings Panel installer is fully compliant with Apple's latest security measures.

IF-FW/DMmkII: Development is on-going and a version that is compliant with the new security measures will be made available as soon as possible. Please keep your system at 10.9.4 or earlier if you wish to continue to use the IF-FW/DMmkII.
TASCAM Mixer Companion: Gatekeeper Security must be set to "allow all" for TMCompanion to be installed. It can be reverted to higher security settings after installation.
Other audio interface products not mentioned are no longer supported.

I want to listen to the direct sound through my interface, but turning the "Monitor Balance" knob isn't doing anything.

Open the US-2x2 / US-4x4 Settings Panel and switch "Line Outputs 1-2" to Monitor. If this is set to "Computer 1-2," the Monitor Balance knob won't do anything.

I am using SONAR and the performance with my TASCAM US-16x08 interface is not very good. How do I fix this?

First, make sure that your audio interface is set to ASIO mode:

Press P to open the Preferences window
Select “Devices” from the left column (under Audio in the left column)
Uncheck anything in the Input Drivers and Output Drivers lists
Click “Playback and Recording” from the left column
Set the Driver Mode to ASIO

Select “Devices” from the left column again
Check all of the US-16x08 inputs and outputs that you want to use

If you still have problems, change the Buffer Size in the US-16x08 control panel:

Open the US-16x08 control panel
Click the Interface tab
Change the Buffer Size to a higher setting

When the computer or iOS device etc. goes into sleep mode, the interface USB LED may blink or turn off and not opertate properly when the external device recovers from sleep mode.

Depending on the usage environment, reboot the interface by turning the power off/on again, or disconnect and reconnect the USB cable.
