Service Notice - X-48 / X-48mkII WannaCry Ransomware Alert

05-15-2017

The TASCAM X-48 and X-48mkII Hard Disk recorders run a cut-down, hardened version of the Windows XP Operating System, released in 2005.

As part of the X-48 feature set, it has the ability to share drive contents via SMB to other computers.

According to many news sites, the Ransomware "WannaCry" uses SMB to infect computers.

Please note that the X-48 and X-40mkIII do not normally operate in "drive sharing" mode, but we are currently investigating whether the WannaCry ransomware would be capable of infecting an X-48 or X-48mkII from another (infected) computer on the same network.

NOTES:

  • If the X-48 is on a network without Internet access, there should be no cause for concern.
  • If all other computers on your network are up to date with Microsoft patches, there should be no cause for concern.
  • The X-48 and X-48mkII cannot be infected directly, because the ransomware is started by running an unknown executable file that is received via email.
  • For absolute safety, please disconnect the X-48 from any network where other computers that are at risk of infection from WannaCry are being used.

TASCAM is continuing to investigate this issue and will publish further information here as it becomes available. In the meantime, should you have any questions regarding the use of your TASCAM X-48 or X-48mkII, please contact your local TASCAM Customer Service team.
